It's nothing
The heart becomes quiet
I wonder why.
Every book has something to convey and an image to show. Books have been the oldest universal media and have been transmitting information for hundreds of years, and every book has its own unique "point of view." It has always been and will continue to be an unspoken understanding that books are a bit annoying.
A printed and bound stack of paper. I wonder if there is some other function or possibility here? A book that stays silent for a little while, a book that is comforting even though nothing happens.
This is how "a paper" was born.
Tomohiro Okazaki immediately agreed to this unusual publishing project. Mr. Okazaki, who designs "moving things" with matchsticks every day, was originally an insect-loving boy, so he played with the physical properties of paper books as if he were observing nature closely.
The finished product is a long, horizontal 400-page book. Okazaki's device is "a single piece of paper." Using a stop-motion technique, the "folds of the paper" on the printed page move back and forth over the course of 400 pages. That's all there is to it. There is no beginning, development, twist or conclusion. There is no emotional climax. There are no "words" to begin with. Nothing happens in the 400 pages. But as I flip through this seemingly pointless stack of paper, my heart is cleansed and I become quiet before I know it.
It was like watching curtains fluttering in the wind. There are a few seconds when the magic of nature is there, like gazing blankly at the shoreline. It appears and disappears at your fingertips. As you flick through the pages, you somehow feel your heart being soothed.
And so, as the fifth publication from FRAGILE BOOKS, we have created a book that we hope you will pick up and take a look at.
