peu belle
edition no.6

This book is a paper jewel box waiting patiently for its lid to be opened. The title of the work, "peu belle," means "a little beautiful" in French. Various "fragments of paper" that fell out during the bookbinding process are carefully tucked into a solid book made from paper that Tsuzuki collected around the world. When you turn the page, tiny pieces of paper like nameless stardust twinkle. One of 30 limited edition books.

Message from the Artist:

A bookbinder's work begins upon receiving a request. They create special books, from one copy to several hundred copies, such as specially bound books and boxes, collections of poems and haiku, notebooks and albums.

The graphic designer Nobuhiro Yamaguchi was the first person to ask me to do a special binding job after he came to my bookbinding class. The request was to compile and bind all the materials that were created during the book design process, such as letters between authors, rejected design proposals, and proof copies, and place each book in a box.10The special edition book and box are2010The exhibition was held at Gallery Yamahon in Mie in 2013.IN prints ON Paper ~ It will be exhibited at the "Yamaguchi Nobuhiro: Works on Paper" exhibition.

Since we only make a limited number of books and boxes upon request, we don't have much left over. Perhaps it's because Yamaguchi wants to keep even a small piece as proof of the work, just like he can't throw away proofs, or perhaps it's simply because he loves them, but he keeps many pieces instead of throwing them away.

Thin strips of paper curled up like stretched coils, scraps of washi paper, triangular corners cut off when wrapping the cover, round holes punched into the quires for thread binding, and half-moon overlapping pieces of paper... I avoided any pieces that seemed unwanted, and when I was done, I placed them in glass jars or small boxes, which I then gently tucked away in a drawer.2021In Osakaippo plusSolo exhibition at "by paper" and I was also asked to create new "works" to exhibit at the gallery. I was racking my brains, not knowing what to create, and the owner, Moriya, couldn't bear to see me like that, so he visited my studio many times. Every time he came, he would pick up the things hanging on the walls, open drawers, examine the pieces carefully, and say with affection, "This is already a work of art." Seeing this, I wanted to somehow respond to him, and so this little book was born.

I bound several kinds of paper that I had collected and inserted various pieces of paper between the blank pages.peu belle" is French for "a little bit It means "beautiful." Every time I turn the page, a tiny piece of paper like stardust appears. This book is my little jewel box.
