Background of the publication


Graphic designer Nobuhiro Yamaguchi is also a member of the haiku society "Sawa", and has been composing haiku for 30 years under the pen name Hoganko. In 2018, he published a collection of about 800 haiku that he had composed over his 25 years as a haiku poet, "Kanakana no Shichi Shichi Yotsuku Nichi Kana", printed entirely in letterpress.private edition publicationI did.

At that time,We planned to create a special edition book based on the collection of haiku, and at Yamaguchi's request,Textile artistThe beginning of this limited edition publication was when we asked Michiharu Mochizuki, the sculptor Kaoru Yokoo, and the bookbinder Tatsuhiko Niijima to create it. The one-of-a-kind picture book we focused on this time is the handmade picture book that Michiharu Mochizuki created at that time.

Nobuhiro Yamaguchi
Graphic designer. Born in 1948. Dropped out of Kuwasawa Design School. After working at Cosmo PR, he went independent in 1979. In 2001, he established Yamaguchi Design Office, Ltd., and at the same time established Origata Design Institute. His main work includes the book design for all 100 volumes of the Sumai Gaku Taikei series published by the Sumai Library Publishing Bureau, and art direction for Kajima Institute Publishing's SD. His publications include Shiro no Shisoku (Messages of White) (Rattles, 2006), Tsutsumi no Kotowari (Privately published, 2013), and the haiku collection Kanakana no Shichi-Nana-Yon-Kana (Privately published, 2018). In 2018, he won the Mainichi Design Award for "Folding Design." He is a member of the haiku society Sawa.


Michiaki Mochizuki
Born in Shizuoka in 1953. He has created a unique world of work using a variety of techniques, including dyeing, ceramics, glass painting, paper prints, lithographs, wood carving, and bronze. He designed the covers of "The Complete Works of Miyamoto Teru, 14 volumes," for which he won the Book Design Award at the Kodansha Publishing Culture Awards in 1995. He has also worked on many picture books and illustration projects, including the cover art for Kobunsha's New Translations of Classics series. He won the Ragazzi Award at the 2001 Bologna Children's Book Fair for his illustrated collection "The Wanderer Down the Road." His collections of works include "Circumference of the Sheep" and "M's Dictionary."
