Irradiação 33

This book was born out of Miguel's interest in creating an archive for the art Porta33 (a contemporary art production project by artists of Madeira Islands origin that began in 1989). The content reflects not only his personal experience as a user of porta33, but also the importance of the archive as a site to disseminate information and knowledge to the Madeira Island community.

Miguel spent a month editing the archive's printed materials, resulting in a selection of 35 items that will be part of this installation, including publications and postcards. The dialogue established by the placement and overlap of these materials can be seen in the book. It seeks to build bridges between text and image, far and near, outside and inside, public and private, and to establish a sustainable connection to the island.

For Porta33, Miguel used books from libraries and bookstores to create an effective and poignant homage to the exhibition's organizers. The texts and images he chooses resonate within the plasticity of the open book to create a meta-narrative that unfolds within an organic position that references notions of difference and repetition. It is an induced reading, an appropriation of the world that is paid back in interpreted perceptions.
