The "Overlapping Boxes" series is one of Aya Koizumi's representative sculptural works. In the early days, the artist created "boxes" that contained miniature structures such as stairs and pillars, but through a process of trial and error, he discovered the idea of "nesting boxes" as he transformed the energy generated by the fact that they are "boxes" into a pure "shape." Although the boxes are nested, this is not a centripetal nesting structure in which boxes are stacked in order, like a tsuzura basket or a matryoshka doll, but rather a unique method in which boxes are shifted centripetally. We will introduce the "overlapping boxes" series of works that were born from the idea of "nesting boxes."

Currently, it is continuing to No.11."Overlapping Boxes"seriesofNo.5This work is made up of various sizes of boards of different thicknesses. The boxes are assembled concentrically, exposing the mechanical structure like a skeleton wristwatch.

The structure that appears complicated is due to nesting (centripetal) and centrifugal.ConflictingBy applying the combined force, the inner boxes, which are of different heights and thicknesses, overlap one another, shifting as they go. Each box is also designed to have its center of gravity in the middle, so even though they are not fixed, they have a mysterious sense of stability. It is consistent with Aya Koizumi's work in that it is neither rough nor chaotic, but is skillfully designed.""Overlapping Boxes 5" isGeometric and organic, the box’s “machine” (ContraptionThis is a work that gives you the feeling of "."
