These three posters are derived from Paper Cats , a book by Kazunari Hattori, who created every key element of FRAGILE BOOKS' visual identity, including our logo and care marks.

As an art director and graphic designer, Hattori has developed a singular design language that is at once gentle and incisive. Although he has designed an extraordinary number of books—including Ryuko Tsushin , Mayonaka , here and there , Obunsha's Petit Royal French–Japanese Dictionary , and Nakajo —it is perhaps surprising that, until Paper Cats , he had never published a book of his own.

Paper Cats is an artist's book conceived, photographed, designed, and written entirely by Hattori himself.

The book features twenty-three "paper cats," each cut out by hand with scissors and then photographed. Built around a single, deceptively simple idea, it is a book that appears as though anyone could have made it, yet achieves a level of refinement that is unmistakably Hattori's own. Wrapped in a vivid blue jacket, the forty-eight-page hardcover has the appearance of a beautifully packaged confection.

The book was published by BON BOOK, the publishing imprint established by a long-standing Japanese printing company. I had the pleasure of serving as its editor.
