Leoni's picture book
He guided me.
Stencil-dyed washi paper by my grandfather, Kojima Tokujiro.

About 10 years ago, the house where my grandfather, Tokujiro Kojima (1912-1996), lived was demolished. While cleaning up afterwards, I came across a picture book by Leo Lionni (1910-1999) called "Inch by Inch."i got you.

When I opened it, I found the stencil-dyed paper that my grandfather had dyed and the Moeki-kai (a group where Keisuke Serizawa was a member)The central dyeing group) was tucked inside. Finding this, my father also remembered those days, and told me about the time when Tokujiro came home with a happy look on his face, saying that his stencil dyeing had been made into a picture book. He had no idea that his grandfather's handiwork was featured in the picture book that also appeared in Japanese textbooks, and even though it was stencil dyeing that he should have been familiar with, he had no idea at all.

My grandfather did not have any direct contact with Leoni. Perhaps the dyed paper that my grandfather and his family exported to overseas somehow ended up in the hands of Leo Lionni, who liked it, and he also wrote about it in his picture books.Several timesThe discovery came to light when my grandfather happened to pick up the picture book.

I tried weaving a bookmark out of the original dyed Japanese paper that my grandfather used to put in his picture books. Then I put it back in its original place, and I was able to participate in the collaboration between Leo Lionni and my grandfather.

Rivotorto Pieces will hold their first solo exhibition, "Passage of Paper Textile". The works are named after the two artists' ancestors whom they have admired since childhood. They feature people from all over the world, past and present, such as saints, picture book authors, and architects. Saint Francis of Assisi, Atsuko Suga, Leo Lionni and Tokujiro Kojima, Bernard of Chartres, Tintoretto, Dante, Giotto, Seiichi Shirai, Sotatsu Tawaraya, William Morris, Édouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, Montaner, Michelangelo, Hermes, Diotima, Barbara Sansoni, Hergé, Hiroshi Yoshino, Rousseau, Frederick II, Simone Weil, Aldo Manuzio, Picasso, and the man from the Masdazil Cave. The messages that accompany each work, detailing encounters with each person, are also quite interesting.
