The colours of Montaner
Barcelona lights.
Feel the warmth of the paper in your palm.

If you go straight down the approach to the Sagrada Família, at the end of it you will come across a building that stands twistedly at a 45-degree angle amid the orderly streets of Barcelona. This is the Hospital de Sant Pau, designed by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner (1850-1923).

On a trip to Barcelona that I once took on the pretext of being a "trip to meet Gaudi (Antoni Gaudí/1852-1826)," I was overwhelmed by the colors I saw at Sant Pau Hospital. The color scheme, which can only work under the Spanish sky, is so vivid, yet somehow mysteriously comfortable, and I couldn't help but admire Montaner's calculated design.

Even if the same thing existed in Japan, I don't think I would find it beautiful. The air and scents rising from the land illuminated by strong light, the trees, fruits, and flowers swaying in the breeze from the sea, and Montaner's thorough knowledge and control of these things made this an achievement possible.

Inspired by the image of a building and the tiles that decorate its walls, the overlapping pieces of paper, angled at 45 degrees, are enclosed in a sky-blue box. However, it is different from the color of Barcelona. Because here, where we are now, there are also colors that are comforting and soothing. And it comes with an envelope so you can share it with someone.

Rivotorto Pieces will hold their first solo exhibition, "Passage of Paper Textile". The works are named after the two artists' ancestors whom they have admired since childhood. They feature people from all over the world, past and present, such as saints, picture book authors, and architects. Saint Francis of Assisi, Atsuko Suga, Leo Lionni and Tokujiro Kojima, Bernard of Chartres, Tintoretto, Dante, Giotto, Seiichi Shirai, Sotatsu Tawaraya, William Morris, Édouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, Montaner, Michelangelo, Hermes, Diotima, Barbara Sansoni, Hergé, Hiroshi Yoshino, Rousseau, Frederick II, Simone Weil, Aldo Manuzio, Picasso, and the man from the Masdazil Cave. The messages that accompany each work, detailing encounters with each person, are also quite interesting.
