Perfectionist,
Dedicated to Michelangelo
An unfinished fragment.

Once upon a time, a "dying slave (Mourant EsclaveI followed the chisel marks made during the carving of "The Great Gatsby" and "Brutus," and repeatedly sketched their rough beauty. I was fascinated by the contrast between polished and unpolished surfaces. I liked the works of Michelangelo (Michelange Buonarroti/1475-1564).

Among them, I remember that the Rondanini Pieta, which he continued to work on until his last breath, was more realistic and moving than anything I had ever seen. It was the final sculpture he created at the age of 89, the end of his life. The Vatican Pieta, which I have yet to see, is said to have been polished to perfection, with a beauty that is clear to anyone. It became the 24-year-old's breakthrough work.

We have been taught that Michelangelo left many of his works "unfinished." But is that really the case? He must have been at the mercy of the times and people, and things probably didn't go as he had hoped. Perhaps his "finished" works were different from what he had originally imagined.

However, I wonder if there was anything left behind by the perfectionist Michelangelo that he considered "unfinished." At the very least, the shape of the piece at the moment Michelangelo stopped working was what Michelangelo considered "complete."

The hands weaving the paper stop at the exact moment when they feel that this is the place.
I feel like this too is now "completed" rather than "unfinished".

Rivotorto Pieces will hold their first solo exhibition, "Passage of Paper Textile". The works are named after the two artists' ancestors whom they have admired since childhood. They feature people from all over the world, past and present, such as saints, picture book authors, and architects. Saint Francis of Assisi, Atsuko Suga, Leo Lionni and Tokujiro Kojima, Bernard of Chartres, Tintoretto, Dante, Giotto, Seiichi Shirai, Sotatsu Tawaraya, William Morris, Édouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, Montaner, Michelangelo, Hermes, Diotima, Barbara Sansoni, Hergé, Hiroshi Yoshino, Rousseau, Frederick II, Simone Weil, Aldo Manuzio, Picasso, and the man from the Masdazil Cave. The messages that accompany each work, detailing encounters with each person, are also quite interesting.
