In the mind and in society
Dedicated to Weil, who contemplated the existence of gravity.
I want you to lift up the paper that is lying down.
Simone Weil (1909-1943) is one of those people who has given me amazing ideas, which give me the opportunity to find vitality even in the midst of suffering.
Although we tend to forget this in our daily lives, we are governed by gravity. We must not forget that gravity is not only a physical force, but also a force that acts on the mind and social relationships. Weil argued that it is only when we remain still and watch the weight of gravity, to the point of almost being absent, that we experience the dynamism that transforms into the creation of life.
Perhaps it was precisely because Weil experienced slave labor in a factory that he was able to advance his thoughts to the creativity that comes with the spirit beyond. Following Weil's example, I wanted to discover the awareness of the power and the reality of grace that paper has.
Try lifting a piece of paper that is lying flat. You will feel our overwhelming force on the paper. Then, feel the gravity acting on it, and lift it even further. Just as the paper leaves the ground, it will reach an equilibrium state, like a ladder connecting the sky and the ground.
I wondered if it was possible to find a powerful life in paper, like the sunlight pouring down from the heavens, the trees that receive it so brilliantly, and the people who nurture life and till the fields.

Rivotorto Pieces will hold their first solo exhibition, "Passage of Paper Textile". The works are named after the two artists' ancestors whom they have admired since childhood. They feature people from all over the world, past and present, such as saints, picture book authors, and architects. Saint Francis of Assisi, Atsuko Suga, Leo Lionni and Tokujiro Kojima, Bernard of Chartres, Tintoretto, Dante, Giotto, Seiichi Shirai, Sotatsu Tawaraya, William Morris, Édouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, Montaner, Michelangelo, Hermes, Diotima, Barbara Sansoni, Hergé, Hiroshi Yoshino, Rousseau, Frederick II, Simone Weil, Aldo Manuzio, Picasso, and the man from the Masdazil Cave. The messages that accompany each work, detailing encounters with each person, are also quite interesting.
