Amitabha Buddha
Edo period
This is an inbuddha statue of Amida Nyorai from the Edo period. Inbuddha statues are handmade prints that were printed in large numbers during the Heian period and were often placed inside the womb of Buddhist statues, and this work is thought to have been created as a womb Buddha.
Joruriji Temple BuddhaLike the "1,000 Buddhas," this stamp was likely created out of a belief in the worship of the "1,000 Buddhas." This stamp gives an endearing impression, as if it is smiling.
The unique impression each Buddha gives and the interesting repetition peculiar to Buddhist Indo-buddha paintings combine to make this a highly approachable piece.
