Huang Yongsong

Huang Yongsong is the general editor of Asia's leading publishing house, ECHO. The “ECHO of Things Chinese,” a series of books on Chinese folk culture, including architecture, festivals, handicrafts, and local cuisine, is a unique publication in the world. The series is unique in the world for its thorough fieldwork, editorial approach based on a unique classification philosophy, bold layout, vivid colors, and special book design. In the 50 years since its inception, more than 130 volumes have been published, and the magazine continues to be actively engaged in research, editing, and publishing.

The "ECHO of Things Chinese” was founded in 1971 as an English-language magazine. The magazine was initially based in Taiwan and introduced Chinese culture to foreigners and overseas Chinese born and raised abroad. Later, when it became possible to travel back and forth between Taiwan and China, those who sought deeper culture inevitably moved their base of operations to Beijing, where they divided up the region and began field research. Thus was born the "Han Sheng Magazine", by the Chinese, for the Chinese.
The "Han Sheng Magazine" is a series of books started in the 1970s during the Cultural Revolution, with the theme of researching and organizing “Chinese,” “traditional,” “living,” and “folk” culture into a single volume or set of books. The founding of the series was inspired by the editor-in-chief, Huang Yongsong's sense of mission that “if I don't act now, I will not make it in time,” and his strong sense of crisis that the traditional culture of the Chinese people is disappearing even at this very moment.
